It's as close to being a Formula 1 driver as I'll ever get and what a great time it was!
On Friday I had a chance to go to F1 Boston (located in Braintree, MA) with my company for a team building event. I had never been to F1 Boston before so really had no idea what to expect. I've raced go-carts before but this was like go-carts on steroids!
From the minute you get there, they try to recreate the racing experience for us armatures. They provide race car suits and helmets for you and have 2 european style race tracks to drive. Their race cars go about 40 mph I would estimate, the tracks are narrow with sharp turns and it really brings out the competition juices in everyone who drives.
(Left: At F1 you get suited up with race gear in the pit before starting the race)
We ran 5 races, each one consisting of 10 laps and at the end of each race you could see what position you were currently in on a big display board. When the racing is finished, you get print outs of each race showing all the times of laps so you can get a feel for how you were driving.
They also have leagues and lessons. I stuck around and caught some of the league racing and it was serious. All the racers had their own personalized racing gear, some with sponsorships. And their laps were consistently around 19 seconds per lap, which was impressive considering I had a few laps that were around 40 seconds (with a few accidents thrown in!).
I was truly impressed with F! Boston and would go back in a heart beat. They specialize in corporate events and team building, and anyone can race. It was no surprise however that the europeans who worked at our company were the top 3 racers!
